(CNN) -- British police have discovered a third body at the burnt-out rural mansion of a financially troubled missing businessman in western England.

A statement Monday from West Mercia Police said investigators had found what they believed to be further human remains in the main part of the property in Maesbrook on Sunday evening.

It added that a British Home Office pathologist confirmed the remains were human and that work was now underway to extricate the body to allow formal identification and a post mortem to take place.

Detective Superintendent Jon Groves, who is leading the investigation, said the removal of the third body found was likely to take some time.

He said: "Due to its position, it will take some time to remove. We are hoping to get it out by the end of today, with a post mortem taking place either tonight or tomorrow. A forensic archaeologist is due to visit the site this morning to offer specialist advice to those working to recover the body.

"We are not able to release any further information with regards the body at this stage, but will do so once the post mortem has been carried out."

On Sunday investigators said the case had become a murder inquiry, after they found the bodies of Jill Foster -- the wife of missing businessman Christopher -- and an unidentified male at the property.

Police said Foster, 49, had been shot in the head. Her badly burned body was identified by dental records.

Jill, Christopher and their 15-year-old daughter Kirstie have been missing since a fire gutted the house on Tuesday.

Supt. Gary Higgins of West Mercia Police told The Associated Press that a 22-caliber rifle belonging to Christopher Foster was found near the bodies.

Three horses and four dogs were also found dead at the estate in Maesbrook, 175 miles (280 kilometers) northwest of London. Police said Sunday the animals had been shot.

"Further tests are needed to establish whether the rifle found was the one used in the murder and to kill the animals." Higgins said.

Police have said they think the family's sprawling property was set alight in an arson attack. The badly damaged house was too unstable for officers to enter for several days, but on Friday detectives discovered two bodies inside.

Forensic officers continued to search for evidence -- and a possible third body -- at the secluded rural property Sunday, as special prayers were said for the family at a nearby church.

According to AP, Police said they are keeping an open mind about the circumstances leading up to the deaths and the fire. One possibility is that Christopher Foster killed his family before either committing suicide or going on the run.

Police are looking into the financial dealings of the 50-year-old businessman, who ran a company that supplied insulation technology to oil rigs. The company, Ulva Ltd., had gone into liquidation, and Foster was facing large bills from creditors and tax authorities, AP said.

Could/would such a thing occur in a tribal system?  Food for thought.
